The Syracuse University men's basketball program honored the life of Lawrence Moten at halftime of Saturday night's contest against Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Moten passed away before the start of this season. He is the all-time leading scorer in program history (2,334 points).
Just after superstar Derrick Coleman and about a decade before Carmelo Anthony, Moten was a dominant force for the Orange in the 1990s (1991-95). Before the 'one-and-done' rule and the transfer portal, Moten spent four years in Central New York, averaging 19.3 points per game for his career.
He made an instant impact, scoring 18.2 ppg as a freshman, 17.9 as a sophomore, then 21.5 as a junior and 19.6 as a senior.
He also averaged 4.9 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists.
Syracuse won 20 games or more in each of his four seasons, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in his freshman, junior and senior years. The Orange got to the Sweet 16 when he was a junior, falling to No. 1 Missouri.
SU has been wearing a commemorative patch on its uniforms all season.
Former SU head coach Jim Boeheim. Mark Konezny-Imagn ImagesThe Basketball Hall of Famer addressed the crowd - and Moten's family - during the ceremony, speaking for nearly two minutes about his former star.
"He was a great family man. This is his family. You are his family.
He loved Syracuse. He's one of the great players that have played at Syracuse. Underrated. You cannot mention great players that played at Syracuse without mentioning Lawrence Moten.
Nobody made it look easier. Nobody loved Syracuse more than Lawrence Moten of all the players we've had...
Lawrence Moten should always be remembered for his love of Syracuse. And I know, right now, he's up there rooting for Syracuse to win a game.
I'm just thankful that I had the opportunity to coach Lawrence Moten, because four years I never had to tell him a thing. He knew how to play. He knew how to be a great teammate. He knew how to be great with his family. He knew how to be great with Syracuse basketball.
...Lawrence Moten may he rest in peace."
Syracuse led Notre Dame 40-31 at the half. A win would push Syracuse to 13-9 and 4-5 inside Atlantic Coast Conference play. Our own Tom Goslowski is at the JMA Wireless Dome and we'll have additional coverage following the conclusion of the contest.
