The Syracuse University men's basketball team suffered a terrible loss on Saturday afternoon, falling 81-73 in overtime on the road against Boston College at Conte Forum.
The Orange are now 12-6 overall and 3-2 inside Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. They saw their three-game winning streak halted, and Boston College improved to 8-10, but just 1-4 inside the league.
The game was tied at 64 at the end of regulation, and Syracuse was outscored 17-9 in the extra frame.
Here's what you need to know.
It can't be underscored how bad a loss this is. Syracuse is hoping to make its first NCAA Tournament since 2020-21 and needs to secure a few big wins in order to get there -- and they need to avoid losses like this. This is a Boston College team that had losses against the likes of Maine and Central Connecticut State.
--Nate Kingz had his best game in an Orange uniform, scoring a game-high 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He also connected for five three-pointers and added six rebounds.
--Beyond Kingz, Donnie Freeman had 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He had 14 rebounds and had secured a double-double by halftime.
--Naithan George had just six points - while adding seven turnovers. Syracuse had 18 turnovers as a team in the loss.
--William Kyle III added three blocks.
--The Orange shot 44 percent from the floor while going 7-of-19 from three-point range and 14-of-22 at the foul line.
--BC had only eight turnovers and shot 40 percent (8-of-20) from downtown.
Kingz had success scoring in a multitude of ways: He was able to get to the basket and finish at the rim, and he was able to connect from deep. Syracuse doesn't shoot it particularly well from three-point land as a team, so if Kingz can stay hot, that will go a long way toward helping the offense keep a groove. SU had scored 83 points or more in each of the last three games.
Some of it comes down to minutes played and opportunity given, but Syracuse needs more production from its bench. The Orange got just one point each from Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White Jr. That's not going to be enough.
The Orange will be back home on Wednesday night when they take on Virginia Tech at the JMA Wireless Dome. Tip-off time is 9 p.m. ET and our own Tom Goslowski will be there live. Follow him on social media @TomGozz.
