The undefeated Orange are making this first road trip of the young season.

Syracuse men’s basketball will play its first road game on Saturday in a matchup with Drexel in Philadelphia.

History between Syracuse, Drexel: The teams have played five times but not since 2011. The Orange are 4-1 in the series, with Drexel’s only win coming in 2006.

About the Orange

Syracuse is 2-0 after wins over Binghamton (85-47, Nov. 3) and Delaware State (83-43) Both victories came at home at the JWA Wireless Dome in Syracuse.

Leading men

Donnis Freeman is leading Syracuse in scoring with 20 points per game, in addition to 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He was one of 20 players named to the watch list for the 2026 Karl Malone Award, given annually to the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.

Rookie Kiyan Anthony is averaging 17 points, thrust into a bigger role due to an injury to starting guard J.J. Starling.

William Kyle III, a transfer from UCLA, is tops on the team with 9 rebounds per game.

The coach

Adrian Autry, a Syracuse alum, is in his third season as head coach. He has an overall record of 36-31 with the Orange and is looking for his first NCAA Tournament berth.

Notable

The Orange have held their first two opponents to 90 total points and are averaging 84 points. That is the lowest number of points allowed in the first two games by Syracuse since the 2014-15 season.

Delaware State shot 21.5% (14 of 65) from the field – the worst shooting percentage since 2014 when Loyola (Md.) shot 19.2% (10 of 52).

Freshman Sadiq White Jr.  scored 20 points against Delaware State for his first double-digit scoring output of the season.

About the Dragons

The Dragons started the season with a 1-2 record, splitting with a pair of neighbors in the Philadelphia area before venturing out of state. They topped Widener (93-59) on Nov. 3 and lost to St. Joseph’s (76-65) last Saturday.

A loss to Colgate (90-83) in Hamilton, N.Y. followed.

Leading men

The Dragons have three players scoring in double figures: Shane Blakeney (14.3 points), Eli Beard (12.3) and Kevon Vanderhorst (10.7).

Blakney is 9-of-20 shooting (45%) from 3-point territory. Beard is a transfer from NCAA Division III program Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Martin de LaPorterie is averaging 15.3 minutes per game but leads the Dragons in rebounds, averaging 6.3.

The coach

Zach Spiker was named head coach at Drexel before the 2016-17 season and has led the team to a plus-.500 record In each of the past five seasons. He has a 132-147 record at Drexel. He previously was the head coach at Army (2009-16) and left with a 102-11 record.

Notable

The Dragons were projected to finish 10th in the Coastal Athletic Association in a preseason vote by the conference’s head coaches.

Drexel is averaging 80.3 points per game and will give Syracuse its best test yet.
