The Orange put up an impressive second half to beat the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.

The Syracuse University men's basketball team earned another much-needed win on Valentine's Day, toppling Southern Methodist University (SMU) 79-78 at the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Orange trailed 78-77 with 13 seconds to play before Nate Kingz hit a near buzzer-beater to win the game. They were down by as many as 12 throughout the contest.

The Orange are now 15-11 overall and 6-7 within Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. SMU fell to 17-8 and 6-6 in the league.

Here's what you need to know.

Kingz steps up again

After scoring 27 points in a Wednesday win against Cal, Kingz had 13 in 35 minutes of action on Saturday. He was 5-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-8 from three-point range, also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out two assists.

Inside the numbers

--The Orange shot 45 percent (27-of-60) from the floor but they also hit 11 threes (11-of-30), which is an extremely high number for them.

--Syracuse, one of the worst free-throw shooting teams in the nation, went 14-of-18 at the line (78 percent).

--The Orange were out-rebounded by six, but also only committed eight turnovers. They registered 14 assists and eight blocks. Donnie Freeman had four of them.

--Freeman (18) and Kingz (13) were joined in double-figures by Naithan George (16) and Kiyan Anthony (13).

--Jaden Toombs (19) led the way for SMU, who had six players score in double-figures.

What else worked well

The play of Anthony. One week ago, Anthony didn't play at all. Today, he registered 24 minutes to score his 13 points. Some have suggested that Anthony plays better the more minutes he gets, and that was certainly true here. He was 5-of-10 from the floor and even hit two threes.

Needs improvement

The Orange won't win many games with JJ Starling (4) and William Kyle III (4) scoring just eight combined points. Starling was just 2-of-6 from the floor and 0-of-2 from three-point range. He had three rebounds.

What's next

The Orange are headed for a brutal stretch: They will play at No. 4 Duke on Feb. 16 (Monday) before coming back home on Feb. 21 (Saturday) against No. 11 North Carolina. UNC just announced that star Caleb Wilson will be out for weeks with injury, making things slightly easier on Red Autry's team. The Orange were beaten by UNC just last week.

Syracuse has five regular season games left.

Also on campus

--The SU women's lacrosse team suffered a tough 13-9 loss against No. 1 North Carolina on Friday night. The Orange are 0-2 on the season, but have been challenged by their schedule. In addition to playing UNC, they also lost to No. 7 Maryland in the opener. They'll be back in action next Friday at No. 5 Stanford as the schedule refuses to ease up.

--The SU men's lacrosse team slipped past No. 1 Maryland on Friday night. They'll be ranked No. 1 in the nation when the next poll comes out.

--And finally, former Syracuse University football player Justin Outten was recently caught in the middle of an NFL coaching battle. Currently employed by the Seattle Seahawks, the Seahawks blocked him from interviewing with the Las Vegas Raiders. Seattle is considering Outten for a promotion to the offensive coordinator spot after just winning the Super Bowl.
