After losing to Boston College over the weekend, the Orange fell to 3-3 inside ACC play with a home loss against Virginia Tech.

The goodwill for the Syracuse University men's basketball team is now gone. The Orange dropped their second consecutive game within Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play on Wednesday night, falling 76-74 against Virginia Tech at the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Orange are now 12-7 overall but they've fallen to 3-3 in the league. Virginia Tech improved to 15-5 and 4-3 in the ACC, though their overall schedule has been soft.

Syracuse was given a greater than 60 percent chance to win the game by ESPN's matchup predictor and entered play as a 3.5 point favorite.

Trailing 72-69 with 21 seconds to play, the Orange got a look at a three for the tie, but Nate Kingz's attempt came up short. The Orange had another chance to get a game-tying shot while down 74-71, but were unable to secure a key rebound.

Here's what you need to know.

Foul trouble and offensive woes

After scoring 83 points or more in three of their first four conference games, the Orange scored 75 or less for the second straight game. Naithan George and J.J. Starling sat much of the first half because of foul trouble and were never really able to get going.

George had just six points on 2-of-4 shooting, contributing only three assists. Starling had a team-high 12 points, but some of those came on free basket runs at the end of the game as the Hokies were working not to foul.

Donnie Freeman, who was playing in front of NBA scouts, delivered his worst offensive game of the season. He had just 10 points and four turnovers, though he did have nine rebounds.

Inside the box score

--Though no one took charge offensively, Syracuse did have a balanced scoring attack. Five different players scored in double-figures for Adrian Autry's team, including Starling (12), Kingz (11), Sadiq White Jr. (11), Freeman (10), and William Kyle (10).

--Though the overall point total was low, Syracuse actually shot reasonably well from the floor. The Orange were over 40 percent from three (10-of-23) and shot 26-of-61 in total (43 percent).

--After having 18 turnovers in a brutal road loss against Boston College, the Orange had 14 more in this contest, registering more turnovers than assists.

--Virginia Tech dominated the contest at the free-throw line, attempting 36 attempts to SU's 14.

--Virginia Tech also had more fast-break points (22-12) and points in the paint (36-32).

What worked well

After getting just two points from the bench against Boston College, the Orange got 25 in this one. White had 11 points and three rebounds while Tyler Betsey had nine points and five boards. Kiyan Anthony had 5 points but was just 1-of-6 from the floor.

Needs improvement

Ball movement continues to be a consistent issue for this team. Syracuse had 13 assists vs. 14 turnovers. Through about 10 minutes of play in the second half, the Orange had just one assist in the half, which was a deviation from better ball movement in the first half.
