The Syracuse University women's basketball team saw its season end with a disappointing 98-45 loss to UConn on Monday night in the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32.
Syracuse, which beat No. 8 Iowa State in the first round, ends the year at 24-9. Connecticut is a perfect 36-0.
Leading the way for the Orange was ACC Rookie of the Year Uche Izoje. who had 12 points and six rebounds. Senior Journey Thompson added six points and eight rebounds.
-UConn's win was even more lopsided than its first round win over No. 16 Texas-San Antonio. The Huskies defeated the Roadrunners 90-52.
-UConn led 33-8 at the end of the first quarter and 65-12 at halftime. At halftime ESPNBet was posting a potential end-game spread of a whopping 76.5 points.
-Azzi Fudd entered the fourth quarter with 34 points while the Syracuse team alone had just 29 points. Fudd finished with a game-high 34 in her final game at Gampel Pavilion.
-The Huskies outscored the Orange by double digits in two of the four quarters. Syracuse struggled from beyond the arc shooting just 1-of-18-from deep. In comparison, the Huskies hit 13-of-26. Fudd had eight alone.
-Syracuse has still only won more than one tournament game once in its program history. The 2016 tournament saw the Orange win five in a row before losing to UConn in the championship game.
Syracuse will lose senior contributors including Thompson, Darius, Laila Phelia and Oyindamola Akinbolawa. All four players saw significant action for the Orange this season.
Though Izoje could test her value in the transfer portal, she is expected to be back to lead the roster. Before Monday's matchup, Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma said Izoje was the best player the Huskies will play all season.
“She knows exactly what shot she wants. She knows when she wants it, and from where, and there's not a lot you can do to keep her from getting it.”
The Huskies advance to take on the fourth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the Sweet 16. Tip-off date and time are still to be determined. The Huskies are seeking the program's 13th national championship and seventh undefeated season.
