The Syracuse University women's basketball team has had a great season thus far, but they got a lesson in what it takes to be a top team in the nation on Sunday afternoon, getting beaten 84-65 by No. 6 Louisville at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Syracuse is now 19-5 and 9-4 inside Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Cardinals improved to 22-4 and 12-1.
Here's what you need to know:
If you're going to beat the No. 6 team in the nation, you'll need everything working in your favor, and Laila Phelia just couldn't get it going on Sunday. Averaging more than 14 points per game, she scored just five on 2-of-9 shooting. She was also 0-of-3 from three-point range and had no assists.
--SU had three players in double-figures, including Dominique Darius, who had 22 on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting. She was also 5-of-6 at the foul line, and 3-of-3 from distance, but unfortunately she also had eight turnovers.
--Uber-talented freshman Uche Izoje had 13 points and eight rebounds while Sophie Burrows had 11.
--SU shot just 39 percent from the floor (22-of-57) while also going 5-of-17 (29 percent) from three. Louisville was 33-of-61 (54 percent) and 7-of-19 from three.
--Syracuse committed 15 turnovers while Louisville had 19. Louisville had 20 assists to just five for the Orange.
--Laura Ziegler scored 22 points for the Cardinals to lead the team in scoring. She was 10-of-13 from the floor.
--The Orange trailed 28-6 after a woeful first quarter but only trailed by eight at halftime after coming back. They got it to within five at 44-39 but were ultimately outscored by three in the third and eight in the fourth.
Izoje showed well in a big test for her against a nationally-ranked team. To put up 13 and six as a freshman is commendable and bodes well for her in a very talented future.
Three things really stand out on this front.
1) Lack of ball movement is something we usually see from the Syracuse men, but to only have five assists on 22 made baskets is just unacceptable. When the ball just sticks, offense becomes harder to come by.
2) SU was out-rebounded by 12, 39-27, showcasing the level of physicality and aggression that top teams play with.
3) The bench only had 12 points. If you're going to beat a nationally-ranked team, not only do the stars have to play like stars, you have to get some unexpected contributions too.
The Orange will be back in action on Feb. 12 at Pitt. Three of the five remaining regular season games are on the road.
