One key contributor has an injury, but is still expected to play.

Syracuse football officially kicks off its 2026 season on Saturday when the Orange host New Hampshire at the JMA Wireless Dome. Kickoff is set for noon ET.

Syracuse is coming off a 3-9 season in 2025, but there are expectations that the group will improve this season after the hiring of defensive coordinator Vince Kehres, as well as a solid transfer portal season that netted head coach Fran Brown talent at multiple positions.

Orange fans received an early glimpse of what players could have an impact in Saturday's game when the team released its official depth chart on Monday.

On Monday, we dove into how the offensive depth chart looked. Now let's examine the biggest takeaways from the defensive depth chart.

About the defense

One of the most surprising omissions from the defensive depth chart was linebacker Gary Bryant III.

Brown mentioned that Bryant was dealing with a knee injury and should be fine for Saturday, despite not being mentioned on the depth chart.

Bryant was tied for the team lead in tackles last season (60). The fifth-year senior was projected to be one of the team's three starting linebackers for Week 1.

We spoke to Bryant last week, and the senior not only did not indicate any injury, but also mentioned how his group could be one of the best linebacker units in the country.

The other interesting part of the depth chart was nickelback Davien Kerr. The coaching staff discussed this summer about where Kerr could fit. Kerr's speed makes him an excellent fit at the nickel position.

Eight "Or's" listed

Eight times on the defensive depth chart the word "or" is used. There could be a variety of reasons for that.

One is that the coaching staff has truly yet to determine what players will get the first and second team spots on Saturday.

Secondly, it is also possible that the defense could use multiple defensive backs in schemes like nickel or dime coverage, and those listed players would be used in those types of sets.

Biggest position of strength

Clearly defensive back, where Demetres Samuel Jr. and NFL Draft hopeful Chris Peal reside on the outsides.

What does depth chart mean for Week 1 and the future?

In similar fashion to most FBS schools, the depth chart could will change week-to-week. While the depth chart is an important part of understanding what players could be key contributors week to week, the listing on the depth chart does not guarantee each player will lead their respective positions in total snaps.
