Alex Kline served as the general manager for SU under previous head coach Adrian Autry.

Former Syracuse men's basketball general manager Alex Kline is set to get another power conference opportunity, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Kline, who was a general manager under previous Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry, was fired, along with Autry and the rest of the staff, in March of this year. Thamel notes that he will become the new general manager at the University of Washington, which plays in the Big Ten.

Kline was brought into the Orange program in the summer of 2024, so he worked two seasons with SU.

But he really only had one season to make his full mark, because getting hired in the summer of 2024 would not have allowed him a full recruiting/portal cycle to make an impact for 2024-25. The 2025-26 season was really his only shot.

About Kline's impact on Syracuse

Syracuse went 15-17 in 2025-26, missing the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year, which were the things that got Autry and Co. fired.

So much of what the general manager does is help facilitate the portal and NIL deals, and Kline had some success there. Naithan George, Nate Kingz and William Kyle III all played prominent roles for SU last season, though one would need full access to their NIL deals to know if they provided enough value.

All three started for the Orange, and Kingz played for the Miami Heat in the NBA Summer League this summer. George has since transferred to Pittsburgh to continue his collegiate career.

More crossover between UW and Syracuse

This isn't the first time that these programs have shared staffers. Former Orange player and longtime Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins, who was in contention for the SU head coaching job before it went to Gerry McNamara, was the previous head coach of the Huskies.

Hopkins is a Syracuse grad who played for the legendary Jim Boeheim (1989-93). Billed as the 'Coach of the Future' for the Orange, his time never came because Boeheim didn't step down until after the 2022-23 season. Hopkins joined the Syracuse staff in 1995 and stayed through the end of the 2016-17 season.

He got the Washington job in 2017, staying for seven seasons.

He went 21-13 in his first season, getting ranked as high as No. 25 in the nation before going 27-9 and reaching No. 20 in year two. That Huskies team (2018-19) advanced to the NCAA Tournament, losing in the second round.

He was a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year.

He's spent the last two campaigns still in the game, working for the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans.
