Francis Folefac has announced that he's linking back up with Gerry McNamara with the Orange.
The Syracuse University men's basketball team secured another key commitment from the transfer portal on Monday afternoon, as former Siena forward Francis Folefac agreed to re-join Gerry McNamara in Central New York.
There's certainly a lot to like about this move, as Folefac averaged 11.3 ppg for a Saints team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. He also brought down 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest.
Just a rising sophomore, he'll have three years left of eligibility with the Orange. At 6'7 and 245 pounds, he's a Maryland native.
Why this move makes sense for the Orange
There's three simple reasons why this move makes all the sense in the world.
1) Folefac is a good player and after a 15-17 season that saw them miss the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year, Syracuse is in need of more good players.
2) He comes in with valuable experience that the rest of the roster can benefit from. He's played in big games and won big games, and he's been in the exact situations that Syracuse hopes to be in. Playing in the NCAA Tournament should be the standard for Syracuse, and Folefac has done it.
3) He's another guy who can help set the new culture at Syracuse. Along with fellow Siena transfer Gavin Doty, Folefac knows what McNamara expects and demands, and he can help facilitate that standard among his new teammates.
Where there are some questions
Folefac is 6'7, meaning he's the exact same height as Kiyan Anthony. Sadiq White is 6'9, as is new Appalachian State transfer Luke Wilson.
White attempted only 19 three-pointers last season. Folefac attempted 16. Wilson attempted zero. Anthony shot just 25.4 percent on 71 attempts.
Syracuse is building an athletic and tough team, and they should be able to defend and rebound, but this is not a team that is currently capable of hitting a ton of outside shots. You have to be able to find offense in addition to suppressing it.
