The former SU guard has a new opportunity.
The Syracuse basketball program, over the course of past century and change, has developed multiple players who have gone on to the professional level. Those players have included Hall of Famers like Dave Bing and Carmelo Anthony, along with excellent NBA players like Sherman Douglas, Derrick Coleman, Pearl Washington, Tyler Ennis, Hakim Warrick and many others.
But beyond simply playing, we have seen several former Orange stars shift their professional careers into coaching. Some of those players include former Orange head coaches Jim Boeheim and Adrian Autry, along with current head Gerry McNamara.
Well, you can add former SU guard Michael Carter-Williams to the list.
Michael Carter-Williams' career at Syracuse
A four star prospect from St. Andrew's Prep in Rhode Island, Carter-Williams committed to Syracuse before his junior high school season. The 6-foot-5 guard joined the Orange in the fall of 2011 and was an immediate impact player. During his freshman season, "MCW" played in 26 games, helping the Orange win 30 games and reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
The following season, Carter-Williams' role expanded on the team. MCW started in all 40 games, posting 11.9 points per game, to go along with more than seven assists and five rebounds.
MCW helped Syracuse to a Final Four appearance.
Carter-Williams was named an honorable mention All-American and a Second-Team All-BIG EAST conference selection.
How did Carter-Williams perform at the NBA level?
After being drafted at No. 11 in the 2013 NBA Draft, Carter-Williams joined the Philadelphia 76ers. Following his rookie season, Carter-Williams joined Coleman and Bing as the only former Syracuse players to be named NBA Rookie of the Year.
Carter-Williams spent time with five other NBA teams during his nine-year career before playing his final game in the league during the 2022-23 season.
Carter-Williams' accomplishments post playing career and newly accepted position
Since departing from the NBA, Carter-Williams has been active in the television broadcasting industry. MCW joined ESPN as a television studio analyst for ACC Network college basketball coverage. This week, Carter-Williams posted on Instagram that he has accepted new role at Brunswick Sports Management, serving as a partner and head of Basketball division.
How his new role could affect his former school
According to Complex, Carter-Williams new role will include "managing client relationships, developing routines and mentoring players through the pressures surrounding modern professional sports."
It's possible the new role could help SU. He could potentially help current or future Syracuse players with NIL deals, becoming a valuable go-between partner for the program and recruits. Furthermore, his connections could help SU athletes get to the professional level, something that could make Syracuse just that much more desirable to prospective players.
