The current head coach at South Florida is a heavy fixture on the Orange's radar.

According to multiple reports, Syracuse is interested in hiring current South Florida men's basketball coach Bryan Hodgson to replace Adrian Autry, who was fired last week after three seasons.

Hodgson has his team in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 11 seed after winning the American Conference championship on Sunday. They will open up play in Buffalo on Thursday against No. 6 Louisville, so you can bet the SU brass will be paying attention to that game. It's possible that athletic department personnel will go to that game in person.

Hodgson is a hot name in this hiring cycle, and Syracuse isn't the only program in pursuit of him. According to Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68, Providence could be ahead of Syracuse at this moment.

"Both Syracuse and Providence want Bryan Hodgson.... I think Providence probably has the lead because they've got more money right now. They've got more NIL, they've got more resources...They are going to have probably upwards of $10 million again, they had $10.5 million this year, in Kim English's final year, where Syracuse is probably looking more in the $8 million range. You take that job, you have higher expectations at Syracuse..."

Goodman also indicated at the end of that clip that the situation around Kiyan Anthony could be a difficult one, and that's something we will tackle on its own here at Syracuse Roundtable.

The Hodgson file

An Olean, N.Y., native, Hodgson has only been the head coach at South Florida for this season. However, the 37-year-old has been coaching college hoops for 18 years. Prior to this season's success with USF, he coached for two years at Arkansas State, winning the Sun Belt regular season title in 2024-25.

Before Arkansas State, he was an assistant coach with both Alabama and Buffalo, working under Nate Oats. He helped Buffalo get to the NCAA Tournament three times, just as he did Alabama.

He started his career at Division III Fredonia State, just outside of Buffalo.

Because of his New York roots and his understanding of the local fanbase/market, he is a logical candidate at SU, however some fans want to see the team hire someone with direct Syracuse ties.

Both Mike Hopkins and Gerry McNamara are in the mix for the position. Both are former Orange players and both are longtime Syracuse assistants. Hopkins is currently working in the NBA with the New Orleans Pelicans while McNamara is the head coach at Siena University. The Saints are a No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will open up on Thursday against Duke.
