Gavin Doty is following Gerry McNamara in from Siena, where the duo advanced to the NCAA Tournament this past season.

While the Syracuse men's basketball program has already seen a number of players announce their intentions to leave the group via the transfer portal, the Orange did secure one commitment on Tuesday in the form of guard/forward Gavin Doty, who formerly played for new head coach Gerry McNamara at Siena.

The 6'5 Doty spoke to Albany-area reporter Griffin Haas on Tuesday about his decision to play for McNamara again, his time at Siena and his lofty goals at Syracuse, saying "I want to win a natty. Why not us? I believe it... that's the goal we have in mind, to win games in March."

Doty is no stranger to March Madness, as he and McNamara helped Siena get there this past season. The Saints won the MAAC Tournament title and earned a No. 16 seed before losing to No. 1 Duke. Siena had an 11-point lead at halftime.

About Doty

Doty was a First Team All-MAAC selection in 2025-26 and previously said that he wanted to play for McNamara his entire college career, which made his connection to Syracuse extremely logical the moment that McNamara got the job. He's also a Central New York native, hailing from nearby Fulton. That should be a big rallying point for fans, and it excites him as well. He said he's been going to games at the JMA Wireless Dome since he was three.

In addition to being a First-Team All-MAAC selection, he was also an All-Rookie selection in 2024-25. He averaged more than 18 ppg this year while also pulling down 6.9 rebounds. He shot 45.8 percent from the floor and 32.6 percent from three-point range. He had 21 in the NCAA Tournament loss against Duke.

He'll have two years of eligibility remaining for the Orange.

Where Syracuse is at right now

At this very moment? The roster is in tatters, meaning that McNamara has his work cut out for him.

Starting guard JJ Starling and starting center William Kyle III are graduating, so they are gone. Point guard Naithan George is in the transfer portal as is superstar Donnie Freeman. So are role players Tyler Betsey, Aaron Womack and Akir Souare.

At this time, Kiyan Anthony is the only sure thing to return to the roster, in addition to Doty coming in. The team will likely work to retain athletic rising sophomore Sadiq White Jr. and there's a chance that senior Nate Kingz will gain another year of eligibility, but that's unclear at this time.
