Danny Lauter has joined the SU football program after a stint at Georgetown, and he's wearing No. 21 for a special reason.

Though new quarterback Danny Lauter just got to the Syracuse football program, his ties to the Orange athletic department run deep.

His grandfather was a manager for the 1959 football national title team and Lauter will be showing off his longtime Syracuse support on the field in 2026.

As noted by Ashley Wenskoski, Lauter has elected to wear No. 21 in support of Syracuse men's basketball legend Lawrence Moten, who passed away before the start of the 2025-26 basketball season.

Lauter put the following on Instagram:

I’m excited to wear #21 to honor Lawrence 'Poetry' Moten.

A family friend & Syracuse legend that left us to soon!

Moten's daughter Lala commented on the post with her support:

Thank you Danny! This is So special 🤍✨

Seeing you wear 21 means everything to us. My dad would love this… he is smiling right now and I know he’s with you on that field every play🙏🏽 🕊️

From my whole family thank you 🙏🏾We’re cheering you on all season!! 💪🏾🔥

About Lauter

A Connecticut native, he'll come to Central New Year with two years of eligibility remaining.

He started 10 games for the Hoyas in 2025, throwing for 187.1 yards per game and 11 total touchdowns. Not much of a runner, he only had four rushing attempts all season.

Georgetown went 6-6 at the FCS level.

Lauter will battle with Steve Angeli, Amari Odom and Malachi Nelson for the starting job, with head coach Fran Brown saying the competition is open

About Moten's 'Cuse career

Just after superstar Derrick Coleman and about a decade before Carmelo Anthony, Moten was a dominant force for the Orange in the 1990s (1991-95). Before the 'one-and-done' rule and the transfer portal, Moten spent four years in Central New York, averaging 19.3 points per game for his career.

He made an instant impact, scoring 18.2 ppg as a freshman, 17.9 as a sophomore, then 21.5 as a junior and 19.6 as a senior. He is the program's all-time leading scorer at 2,334 points.

He also averaged 4.9 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists.

Syracuse won 20 games or more in each of his four seasons, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in his freshman, junior and senior years. The Orange got to the Sweet 16 when he was a junior, falling to No. 1 Missouri.

SU wore a commemorative patch on its uniforms all season. His No. 21 is retired by the basketball program.
