John Wildhack's tenure as Syracuse officially came to end Wednesday
In February of this year, Syracuse University athletic director John Wildhack announced he would be retiring, and ending his role for the school on June 30. With this being the final day of June, Wildhack is now done, and he delivered a message to Orange Nation.
John Wildhack's background before joining Syracuse
Before becoming the athletic director for Syracuse in 2016, Wildhack had a 30 year career working for ESPN.
During his time as an executive for ESPN, Wildhack's responsibilities included the oversight of all ESPN and ABC games, event and studio production work for domestic and international television and radio, programming acquisitions, and rights-holder relationship management and scheduling.
Wildhack's accomplishments during his tenure
During the decade-plus run with Wildhack in charge, Syracuse athletics achieved impressive results across multiple sports. Some of those high marks included a men's soccer national championship in 2022, and an individual cross-country national championship for Justyn Knight in 2017. Wildhack was also instrumental in the renovation of the home of the Orange, the JMA Wireless Dome.
Criticisms of Wildhack's performance
Despite some of the team and individual success, some Orange fans have not been thrilled with the direction of two popular programs over the past decade. Four months before Wildhack began his role as athletic director, both the men and women's basketball teams reached the Final Four. Since then? Neither program has matched the feat again.
In fact, Syracuse men's basketball has had some of its worst regular seasons in program history under his watch. SU went 15-17 this past season before firing head coach Adrian Autry.
The football program did achieve a double-digit win season in Fran Brown's first season in 2024, but Wildhack also fired previous coach Dino Babers. Since Wildhack has served as athletic director, the football program has yet to play for an ACC championship and has a combined record 55-68.
Message to Orange fans on final day
Wildhack joined ESPN Syracuse's Orange Nation on Tuesday afternoon and shared this message to Orange fans:
"I'm thankful and grateful for the experience. I'm thankful for your support. Go Orange."
Future of Syracuse athletics
In March, Syracuse officially hired Bryan Blair as the school's next athletic director.
A former college football player at Wofford, Blair began working his way up the administrative track following his time as a collegiate athlete.
In 2022, Blair was hired as the athletic director at Toledo. His hiring in '22, gave him the distinction as the youngest athletic director of any college with teams competing at the FBS level.
Just days after his formal announcement in the spring, Blair was a part of the committee that hired Gerry McNamara as the school's next men's head basketball coach.
In April, Blair launched "Orange Collective" a new name image and likeness for Syracuse athletics.
In May, Blair was recognized by Silver Waves Media as being of the nation's best athletic directors.
Orange fans' goals for Blair are likely to mirror that of Wildhack's criticisms. If both the basketball and football programs are contenders in the ACC and in the mix for the national tournaments, Syracuse fans will deem Blair's performance as a success.
