SU dropped a 72-59 contest on the road at No. 18 Virginia.

The Syracuse University men's basketball team suffered a disheartening 72-59 loss against No. 18 Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.

The Orange were down just three (38-35) at the half, but were outscored by 10 in the second stanza in falling to 13-11 on the season. Syracuse is also just 4-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while Virginia is 20-3 and 9-2.

Here's what you need to know from the latest league setback.

Rotation questions abound

Syracuse relied heavily on its starters in this one, with each of William Kyle III, Donnie Freeman, Nate Kingz, Naithan George and JJ Starling playing 30 minutes or more. The bench? Not a ton of minutes, and even less productivity. Tyler Betsey played 17 minutes and Bryce Zephir and Ibrahim Souare each got eight minutes, but Sadiq White Jr. played only two minutes and Kiyan Anthony didn't play at all. Betsey had just three points and White had two.

It was Anthony's first DNP of the season. He just scored 10 points on Monday night at North Carolina.

Inside the numbers

--Syracuse got double-figure scoring efforts from George (19), Kingz (13) and Starling (13), but Freeman had just five on 2-of-11 shooting and Kyle had just two on 1-of-3 shooting.

--The Orange shot a very solid 49 percent (25-of-51) from the floor, but they once again struggled from three-point range, going only 3-of-11 (27 percent).

--On the other side, Virginia hit 10 threes, going 10-of-30. Virginia also made four more free-throws than the Orange did.

--Syracuse was out-rebounded by 10 and committed 13 total turnovers. Once again, ball movement was an issue, as SU had just nine assists on 25 made buckets.

--Sam Lewis had 16 points for the Cavaliers to lead the team in scoring.

What worked well

Shooting 49 percent is always a good thing, and George was a stellar 8-of-9 from the floor. However, had just three assists while also racking up five turnovers.

What didn't

Syracuse is simply not good enough to win games when Freeman doesn't play well. Five points on 2-of-11 shooting leads to 59 total points for the team, which is not enough to win most games in the ACC.

Again, the three-point shooting is a problem, and 27 percent won't get it done.

Up next

SU is back home on Feb. 11 at the JMA Wireless Dome against Cal. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will air on ESPNU. Our own Tom Goslowski will be there with live coverage.
