The announcement was made on Wednesday morning, and could have an impact on the Orange and their fans.
For nearly 20 years, Syracuse Orange fans in Central New York have been able to listen to lacrosse, basketball and football games on Galaxy Communication-owned stations.
That could be changing over the course of the next 12 months after an announcement on Wednesday had the stations being sold to Pamal Broadcasting out of Albany.
Here's what you need to know:
Why Galaxy Communications sold to Pamal Broadcasting
Ed Levine, owner of Galaxy Communications, announced earlier this year that he would retire from the media profession over a 40-plus year career.
Levine on Wednesday announced he would be selling his company to Pamal Broadcasting, a media company with affiliates across the Albany area, but also into Vermont.
Since 2007, Galaxy Communications has served as the home for Syracuse athletics broadcasts. WAER is student-run radio station that has also provided coverage of Orange athletics during that same time frame.
ESPN Radio Syracuse has been the home of Orange pregame and post game show coverage during the nearly two decade-long partnership between Galaxy and Syracuse.
What does it mean for the future of Syracuse athletics radio broadcasts?
The next few months will likely bring more clarity to that question. While Pamal Broadcasting now has the flagship station rights for Syracuse athletics, other media companies air Syracuse football and basketball games.
Radio stations like WGY and WOFX in Albany and WHAM in Rochester air Orange games, but are affiliated with iHeart Media.
Cumulus Media aired the Syracuse games previously in Central New York before Galaxy began airing the games in 2007.
Chuck Benfer, Pamal’s chief operating officer, said to Syracuse.com that the company has no plans to make changes to the Galaxy stations’ formats or personnel.
Can you still listen to the Syracuse football game on radio this Saturday?
Yes. No changes have been announced by the radio station as of Wednesday afternoon. CBS Sports Network will have the television coverage at noon ET. On the audio side, fans can listen across multiple affiliates in New York State. In the Central New York area, the game can still be heard on broadcast on the radio side on TK99/105 (99.5/100.5 FM) and WAER (88.3) and through Cuse.com.
Following the game on Saturday, SyracuseRoundtable will be offering insight and takeaways from the contest.
The Orange are 1-2 on the season while the UConn Huskies are 2-2. Kickoff is set for noon ET. Syracuse beat UConn 27-20 last season at the JMA Wireless Dome.
