After initial reports circulated on Sunday afternoon, ESPN has confirmed the news.

1:55 p.m. ET: According to a new report from ESPN's Pete Thamel, the deal has been confirmed.

Sources: Syracuse is working to finalize a deal to hire Siena coach Gerry McNamara as the school’s next head coach, per me and @jeffborzello. McNamara won a national championship as a player at Syracuse and led Siena to the NCAA Tournament this year.

There are no financial details or contract length details out yet, but we will have that information as it becomes available.

1:40 p.m. ET: According to a report from legendary reporter Dick Weiss, current Siena University head coach Gerry McNamara is expected to be named the next head coach at Syracuse.

Per Weiss on social media:

here's a fitting ending to a feel good story. former Syracuse star, Siena coach Gerry MacNamara is expected to become the Orange's next basketball coach.

Weiss has more than 26,000 followers on X and spent 40 years at the New York Daily News. The following note reinforces his credibility as well:

Weiss is the past president of the Football Writers of America and U.S. Basketball Writers Associations and was the youngest recipient of the prestigious Curt Gowdy Award for media excellence from the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Again, this story has not been confirmed as of yet, but Weiss's journalistic chops speak for themselves. And for what it's worth, Mike McAllister of 24/7 Sports had this to say.

One of the most decorated players in SU history, McNamara had his No. 3 retired by Syracuse in 2023 after a stellar four-year career that saw him win a national championship in 2003 and earn three All-Big East selections. He was also a two-time All-Big East Tournament team member.

He scored 2,099 career points and is second all-time in program history in steals. He spent 15 years on the staff before leaving for Siena and many fans want to see him get the job. Some, however, are scared off by the fact that he's an alum and want to see Syracuse try a fresh approach.

McNamara made the NCAA Tournament this year with Siena after winning the MAAC title. His No. 16 Saints nearly upset No. 1 Duke, holding a 13-point lead in the second half before falling 71-65.

McNamara checks every box at this point: He's young (42), relatable, has a good relationship with alumni, was on staff already for 15 years before leaving for Siena, has proven he can win and has shown at Siena that he can win with less resources. That is apparently the situation at Syracuse, which is expected to have around $8 million in NIL money.

The Syracuse women's basketball team earned a hard-fought win on Saturday night in the Round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange, seeded ninth, beat No. 8 Iowa State to earn a Monday date with No. 1 UConn.

Playing without starting point guard Dominique Darius, Olivia Schmitt stepped up with a career-high 15 points, all in the first half.
