The Orange are headed to the tournament and will play Yale on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET, but one of their own will also be at the helm of another tournament team.

The Syracuse University men's lacrosse team was given an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night, and they will take on Yale of the Ivy League this upcoming Sunday at 5 p.m. ET in the first round.

The game will be played at the JMA Wireless Dome. After falling just short in the Final Four a season ago, Syracuse is still looking for its first national championship since 2009.

If Syracuse fans are looking for a reason to get invested in the tournament - beyond Syracuse itself - look no further than the Jacksonville Dolphins, who are coached by Syracuse alum John Galloway.

Who is John Galloway?

A Syracuse native who attended lacrosse power West Genesee for high school, Galloway has been the head coach at Jacksonville since 2016. Before getting to Jacksonville, he was an assistant coach at Providence for four years.

He was named as the Southern Conference's Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2022 and led the team to a 10-5 record this season. Now in the Atlantic Sun, this is the first title in that conference for the Dolphins.

They'll play Robert Morris in a play-in game on Wednesday night (7 p.m. ET) with the winner playing No. 2 seed Notre Dame on Sunday.

Galloway played four sensational seasons at Syracuse, graduating in 2011, meaning he was hired as a head coach just five years after his playing career ended.

A goalie, Galloway rewrote the record books in Central New York.

Per the Syracuse website:

Finished his career as the NCAA and Syracuse’s all-time leader in wins (59) and minutes played by a goalie (3,776) … Posted an overall career record of 59-8 … Ranks seventh in NCAA history and holds the Syracuse record for best career goals-against average (7.33)… Also holds the Orange record for NCAA Tournament career goals-against average (min. six games as a starter) with a mark of 7.20 … Seventh on the Orange’s all-time saves list (601) … Only starting goalie in NCAA history to win national championships as a freshman and sophomore … Only two-time, first-team All-American goalie in school history … Program’s first two-time national academic All-American.

He was also a Tewaaraton Award finalist.

In addition to his collegiate playing and coaching accolades, Galloway played professionally in both Major League Lacrosse and the Premiere Lacrosse League. He was a two-time MLL All-Star.

We will continue to follow Galloway's run through the NCAA Tournament here at SyracuseRoundtable.
