Find out more about the newest addition to the Orange roster under first-year head coach Gerry McNamara.

New head coach Gerry McNamara continues to stay active this offseason as he picked up another player for the 2026-27 version of his roster. Late Tuesday night, Syracuse basketball received a commitment from seven foot center Iker Martinez, a native of Mexico.

Scouting report on Martinez

This past season, Martinez played in the United States as a member of the Arizona Compass Prep and Elev8 Academy teams.

According to Martinez's posts on social media, he also had scholarship offers from Cal State-Northridge, High Point, Missouri-Kansas City and Sacramento State.

The 19-year old Martinez took to X to share his commitment to the Orange, saying:

"Go Cuse!! #Committed"

What could Martinez's role be in 2026-27?

Syracuse has brought in several experienced veterans via the transfer portal this offseason, meaning that Martinez is likely to be more of a developmental player this season.

The class of 2030 prospect will be one of the youngest players on the roster. Martinez adds much-needed size to the team, as he and newcomer Abdramane Siby will be the two tallest players on the roster both at 7-feet. Martinez joins Siby, along with transfers Luke Wilson and Tasman Goodrick as centers on the roster. Goodrick is 6-10.

Martinez former coach shares praise on social media

Martinez's former coach, Cory DeSanti, was excited to see his former player find a collegiate home. DeSanti, the coach at Eleve8 Academy shared the following message on X:

Syracuse Basketball just got an unbelievable talent.

What does the roster look like now?

After the recent commitment of Martinez, Syracuse's roster is now filled with 14 players, with one scholarship still left. One question that stills needs answering: What is the basketball future of Calvin Russell III? A five-star football prospect, Russell joined the basketball team mid-way through this past season. During spring football practice, Russell suffered a torn Achilles tendon, which will likely force him to miss a majority of the upcoming football season.

Russell has said he wants to play basketball again, and he's already met with McNamara, but how does his injury impact things? If he elects not to play, is another roster spot open? When will that decision get made?

Here's what a projected roster could look like this fall, taking into account the transfer portal additions.

Guards: Kiyan Anthony, Noah Lobdell, Gavin Doty*, Aiden Tobiason*, Garwey Dual*, Ryan Moesch**

Forwards: Sadiq White Jr., Calvin Russell III, Tasman Goodrick*, Mark Morano Mahmutovič*, Francis Folefac*

Center: Luke Wilson*, Abdramane Siby*, Iker Martinez*

*Denotes transfer portal addition or international signing
