Luke Wilson could be the latest to join Gerry McNamara's roster.
Under new head coach Gerry McNamara, the Syracuse men's basketball program has been quite active in the transfer portal through its first two weeks.
The Orange have already secured commitments at every level of the roster, and they may not be done yet.
According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Syracuse is one of the programs that's showing interest in Appalachian State transfer Luke Wilson. Rothstein reports that Georgia, Mississippi State, Saint Louis and Cincinnati are also expressing interest.
A reminder: While there is a deadline for a player to enter the transfer portal, there is no deadline as to when a player can actually sign with a team.
Here's what you need to know about Wilson.
The Wilson profile
Having played two seasons at Appalachian State, Wilson will enter 2026-27 as a rising junior. A 6'9 native of Georgia, he averaged 10.7 ppg and 8.3 rebounds this past season. He had 20 games in double figures and was also named the Sun Belt's Defensive Player of the Year.
As noted by Appalachian State, he was one of only two players in the Sun Belt to register multiple five-block games this season. He helped the Mountaineers to a Top-15 national ranking in defensive field-goal percentage and scoring defense.
What's the good here?
Based on what McNamara has built so far, it's clear that he wants to build a big team with length, and Wilson certainly fits that bill.
Defensively, Syracuse is losing William Kyle III to graduation, and Wilson seems like an immediate replacement for him. Long, athletic, a rebounding presence, and a guy who blocks shots? That sounds exactly like Kyle - but Wilson comes with more offensive upside.
What is the question here?
Like Kyle, Wilson is not a threat from the outside: He attempted no three-pointers in 2025-26. Also like Kyle, he's not a good free-throw shooter (56.7 percent).
At that point, McNamara needs to ask himself some questions.
1) 6'9 is a center in the Sun Belt. Does McNamara think that Wilson can be an undersized center in the ACC? How will that impact the rest of the rotation if he's in the game?
2) Does McNamara think that Wilson needs to play more on the perimeter because he wants a bigger center on the floor? If that's the case, is Wilson quick enough offensively and defensively to do that? Will there be enough offense on the floor around Wilson to make his defensive abilities worth any offensive sacrifice?
While Kyle was an excellent addition to the Orange in 2025-26, we saw the limitations the offense had when he was on the floor. Is McNamara prepared to take those same risks, or does he think those risks don't exist as much as we fear?
