The kicker connected on a 56-yard blast in the waning moments on Thursday.
The Cleveland Browns continued to be one of the NFL's biggest surprises on Thursday night as they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24 on Thursday Night Football.
With the win, the Browns are now 3-1 and at the top of the AFC North, which is fairly incredible considering they were run over by the Jacksonville Jaguars (34-10) in Week 1.
Syracuse Orange football alum Andre Szmyt had a big hand in the win, connecting on a 56-yard field goal in the waning seconds to help power the victory.
So far, through four games, he's 8-for-8 on field goals and 7-for-7 on extra points. The Browns are not the most talented team in the NFL, so they have to win games on the margins. Special teams is how you do that and Szmyt is clearly helping.
A two-year veteran, Szmyt has spent both seasons with the Browns. He was 24-of-27 on field goals in 2025 while also going 25-of-26 on extra points.
The Browns will now enjoy the mini-bye and will be back in action on Oct. 11 against the New York Jets, who are 1-2.
About Szmyt at Syracuse
A native of Illinois, Szymt spent five years playing with the Orange, taking full advantage of the extra year given to players who played during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 60 total games, he was 85-for-105 on field goals (81 percent) and 199-of-203 on extra-points (98 percent).
He participated in two bowl games with the Orange (2018, 2022) and also earned All-America status in Freshman season. That year, he led the nation in field goals made (30), field goals attempted (34) and points scored (151).
As for the current group of Orange
Syracuse will be back in action on Saturday afternoon (noon ET) when they travel to Connecticut to take on the UConn Huskies. The Orange are 1-2 following losses to Cal and Pitt while the Huskies are 2-2 after a recent loss against Miami (Ohio).
The Orange haven't played since Sept. 17, so they will be plenty rested for this matchup, and hopefully they'll be more prepared as a result of that time off.
Quarterback Steve Angeli is set to get the start in this contest despite the fact that he's thrown five interceptions in his last two games - all in the second half. Backup quarterback Amari Odom, a transfer from Kennesaw State, is expected to see action. However, it's unclear how much.
