The star receiver and top recruit tore his Achilles this week, but shockingly isn't slated to miss the entire season.
When you hear that, you presume that a player is going to miss the entire season.
According to SU head coach Fran Brown on Wednesday night, that is unlikely to be the case.
Relayed via Syracuse television reporter Ashley Wenskoski:
"You'll see him on the field this season, just probably not at the beginning of the season. He's gonna probably heal pretty fast, his was a little different from talking to the doctors...he was killing it in practice."
Brown said he could be back as early as late October/early November
It's unclear what Brown means by "his was a little different," but if he's back on the field in late October or early November, that's about a seven-month recovery, which is shockingly fast.
For instance, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in May of 2025 and didn't return until March of 2026. That is a 10-month recovery. Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles in June of 2025 and still hasn't returned yet.
Heck, Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli tore his Achilles in September of 2025 and still walks with a noticeable limp six months later.
If Russell is able to beat those timelines, then that's great for him and great for Syracuse, it's just difficult to conceptualize that being the case.
A player retains his eligibility if he plays in four or fewer games. Perhaps Russell could come back for the last four and still receive a redshirt. If he did that, he'd play beginning Nov. 6, which tracks with Brown's timeline.

A standout athlete from Florida, Russell is one of the best recruits in Syracuse football history and was scheduled to be an integral part of the SU football program immediately in 2026. He graduated high school early, enrolled in Syracuse for the second semester, and immediately joined the basketball team. He has planned on being a two-sport athlete all along. He appeared in one basketball game, joining the football program at the conclusion of the hoops season.
Elsewhere in Syracuse news
It was announced on Wednesday that the Syracuse men's basketball team will play Indiana in a non-conference game this November. The Orange will also play Providence, clearly in an effort to bump up their non-league schedule. SU didn't play true non-conference road games in 2025-26, finishing the year at 15-17.
