Fran Brown spoke to the media Monday after the team's weekend win over UConn.

The Syracuse Orange football team was able to fight off a late comeback and hang on to claim a 42-41 overtime road win on Saturday afternoon against the UConn Huskies.  After a 15-day day lay off, the Orange were able to get back to .500 (2-2) on the season, in part because of some lineup adjustments from head coach Fran Brown.

On Monday, Brown addressed those changes during this weekly press conference.

"No Positions are Safe"

The most interesting quote during Brown's conversation with the media was: "No positions are safe."

The third-year head coach has indicated that all 25 positions (that includes punter, kicker and long snapper) will be evaluated as the week progresses. And this approach is becoming more rare.

In an environment where players are compensated based off past or - projected future - performance, along with the ability to enter the transfer portal after one season, Brown seems to not be concerned about potentially losing players who are disgruntled with their playing time/snap count.

Brown's approach should be happily accepted by Orange fans. Syracuse supporters certainly appreciate not just hearing, but seeing, a coach prepare for each individual contest by playing the players he believes gives his team the best chance to win. Other coaches across the country may stay more stubborn in their preseason approaches or find themselves pressured to play athletes because of NIL payments. Brown's tactic could be a beneficial one moving forward.

Will Amari Odom start again Saturday?

Brown, in similar fashion to the last two weeks, noted that practice performance would play a large part in determining who would be the starting quarterback for the next contest, which is Saturday against Virginia. After a six-touchdown performance against UConn, it seems like Odom will earn his second start for the Orange.

Following Saturday's win, Brown did say that Odom is "who we’re running with right now." But Brown did not confirm anything on Monday.

What other changes could Brown make against Virginia?

Offensive line- Jayden Mann saw increased reps against UConn and nine total offensive lineman played against UConn. That may be hard to replicate moving forward and it seems like six or seven is a more likely number.

Running back- Tylik Hill started in Week 1 against UNH but was removed after the game was a blowout. He started in Week 2 before getting injured as well, and now that he's back, he should remain the lead back after a 140-yard performance.

Secondary- This is the toughest spot to figure out early in the week. The injury status of Naz Ward will likely bring some clarity to how Brown handles the group on Saturday. Chris Peal could see time at both corner and safety against the Cavaliers.

Special teams-Holder Rich Belin was replaced during field goal attempts. Long snapper Fran Brown Jr has had some questionable snaps as well. It's very possible Brown could view this as a spot for new players on Saturday.
