Despite being in a tough situation now, the future got a little brighter for Fran Brown's team on Tuesday.

At 3-6 overall and 1-5 inside Atlantic Coast Conference play, the Syracuse University football team is having a rough go of it in 2025, but the future beyond this season got a little brighter on Tuesday as the Orange received a commitment from four-star defensive back Tedarius Hughes. Hughes plays safety.

A Florida native, he flipped his commitment from Florida State to Syracuse. As Mike McAllister of 24/7 Sports notes, Syracuse now has the No. 23 recruiting class for 2026.

You can see some of Hughes's footage here:

It's unclear why exactly he decommitted from Florida State, but given that the Noles are 4-4 and 1-4 inside league play, perhaps the future of head coach Mike Norvell is unknown.

Syracuse has struggled as well, but Fran Brown's ground appears to be more steady. Syracuse has lost five consecutive games and is coming off a defeat against Bill Belichick's North Carolina team on Friday night.

It doesn't figure to get any easier for 'Cuse moving forward, as they'll take on nationally-ranked Miami (No. 18) and Notre Dame (No. 10) in consecutive weeks before ending the season against Boston College on Nov. 29.

But despite how things look right now, the commitment of Hughes should have everyone in Central New York just a little bit happier this week.

Syracuse.com had more information on Hughes, including his tie to another Orange commit.

Billed at six feet, three inches and 180 pounds, Hughes plays at Miami Northwestern with four-star wide receiver Calvin Russell III, a Syracuse commit. He was with Russell over the weekend as the two visited Syracuse, beginning with Friday’s game against North Carolina.
