Not only did the Orange lose against Virginia on Saturday night, they may have lost multiple important pieces.
The Syracuse Orange football team suffered a terrible 28-25 loss against Virginia on Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va., but it turns out they may have lost more than the game.
The quarterback room is in disarray, to say the least.
Incumbent starting quarterback Steve Angeli, who was already benched earlier this year, was unable to play because of a PRP injection he got for the Achilles tendon he tore a year ago. Backup Amari Odom, who led the team to a 42-41 win over the UConn Huskies last week and was expected to start, couldn't play because of a shoulder issue. And third-stringer Malachi Nelson, who started on Saturday, left the game in the fourth quarter with his own injury.
After the game, we learned that Odom may have something torn in his right shoulder. Nelson may have injured his collarbone on a scramble late. While too early to speculate, it's quite possible that the Orange will have to go into next week's game against Louisville with fourth-string quarterback Danny Lauter under center.
Lauter entered in relief of Nelson and went 1-for-4 with a 46-yard touchdown pass. He also completed a two-point conversation that helped bring the deficit to 28-25 from 28-17.

If the rotating cast of quarterbacks sounds familiar, it should. The Orange dealt with the same thing last season, unfortunately.
Syracuse began the 2025 campaign at 3-1 behind Angeli, but he then missed the final eight games of the year after tearing his Achilles. Syracuse lost all eight games in his absence, cycling through Rickie Collins, Joseph Filardi and Luke Carney as well.
After the season ended, head coach Fran Brown made it a point to go out and deepen his quarterback room. He did that, but the depth has whittled away already.
Up next
The Orange will return home on Saturday night to take on the Cardinals at the JMA Wireless Dome. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and it's the first SU home game in more than a month. The Orange haven't been at home since a Sept. 12 loss to Cal.
Louisville is 3-3 on the season and 2-2 within ACC play. They are coming off a 44-20 win against Florida State on Friday night and they certainly have the talent to make life tough for Syracuse, especially if the fourth-string quarterback is forced into starting action.
The Orange are 2-3 and we'll learn more from Brown this week.
