Steve Angeli is set to be under center when the Orange take on Pitt on Thursday night.
After a disappointing loss on Saturday afternoon against Cal, the Syracuse Orange football team is set for another conference showdown on Thursday night when they travel on the road to Pitt (7:30 p.m. ET).
The Orange are 1-1 while Pitt is 2-0. However, they didn't look particularly good in a 12-7 win over Central Florida on Saturday.
This will be the first road game of the season for head coach Fran Brown's team. The Orange will look to even up their league record at 1-1. And as they try to do that, it looks like quarterback Steve Angeli will remain under center.
As noted by Brown on Monday, Angeli is expected to start. He threw three interceptions on Saturday in the loss, but he's not being benched for performance. He also was banged up in the loss, but he's checked out OK medically. Angeli is coming off a torn Achilles tendon suffered in September of last season. There had been questions if he was fully healthy so far this season.
Starting him again, as long as he's healthy, seems like the right move. Syracuse went 3-1 with him under center last season before the injury. He's the most accomplished quarterback that the Orange has, and he led SU to a 66-3 win over New Hampshire in Week 1.

With Angeli's status seemingly confirmed, there are several other things that the Orange need to figure out:
1) What is the status of running back Tylik Hill? The starter left Saturday's loss after just two carries with a quad injury. Is he going to be able to go? And if he's not, is Ju'Juan Johnson going to be the featured back again, or will it be freshman Shavane Anderson Jr., who had a big Week 1?
2) What exactly is the plan for freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell III? The five-star wide receiver recruit warmed up with the team before Saturday's game and there was an appearance that he had a chance at playing, but he ultimately sat out. On Monday, Brown said he has not been through full contact yet. So how close is he to actually playing? We do not know yet.
3) Can the Orange cut down the penalties? They had double-digit penalties, including one that wiped away a punt return for a touchdown. Can they clean it up on the road in a tough environment?
