The Orange are looking for help on special teams.

If you want to look at the Syracuse Orange football team with a glass half-empty point of view, you can simply point to the team's record.

The Orange 3-4 entering play on Saturday afternoon against SMU. The Orange went 3-9 a season ago and are 3-4 this year, and they just finally won their first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) game in more than a calendar year. With a difficult end of season schedule, there's a very good chance that the Orange finish under .500 and miss a bowl game for the second straight year.

If you want to look at the Orange from a glass half-full point of view, you can say that the Orange are 3-4, but they are developing young talent like Calvin Russell III. And they've had to navigate a very tenuous quarterback rotation that has seen each of its top-3 signal callers get injured at some point this season.

Beyond that? The Orange could easily be 5-2 if they weren't struggling so bad in the special teams department. The Orange could have beaten Cal in Week 2, but were undone by missed kicks, and the same could be said for the Louisville game in Week 6. If the Orange had reliable kicking, they'd be on the verge of being bowl eligible already and they'd be in the conversation for an ACC title game berth.

But the reality is that Syracuse has missed the most field goals and extra points in the nation, and on Thursday, they took a drastic measure to find some help.

As noted by Mike McAllister of 24/7 Sports, the Orange have added soccer player Quinn Olcott to the roster. Olcott hasn't accumulated any stats for the soccer team yet this season. He still figures to be behind kickers Shay Barker and Tripp Woody, but Woody has battled injury this season and Olcott could be good depth should he continue to fight his health.

Up next for the Orange

Syracuse will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at noon ET against SMU at the JMA Wireless Dome. The Mustangs come in at No. 19 nationally and off a 59-20 win over Cal. Syracuse defeated North Carolina 31-30 in overtime last Saturday.

This afternoon game snaps a streak of three consecutive night games for the Orange. But it will work out for the best, as the crowd won't be heavily impacted by Halloween festivities in Central New York.
