It's unclear if defensive back Demetres Samuel Jr. will be able to participate in the spring game on April 11.
Syracuse football standout Demetres Samuel Jr. is apparently dealing with an injury this offseason.
According to television reporter Ashley Wenskoski, Samuel was walking around Syracuse's Pro Day on Monday with his left arm in a sling. Because it's the offseason, Syracuse is not required to update the media on injuries. The spring game is set for April 11, so it's unclear if Samuel will be able to play in that contest.
Wenskoski noted that punter Jack Stonehouse, Duce Chestnut, Devin Grant, Dan Villari and more were back in Syracuse for the Pro Day workout. Only Stonehouse was invited to the NFL Combine, so this is the only real chance for some of these players to perform for NFL decision makers.
About Samuel
A bright spot in a down (3-9) Syracuse season, Samuel wrapped up his freshman campaign in 2025. The standout finished tied for fourth for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Defensive Rookie of the Year award, finishing behind only Luke Ferrelli (Cal), Mandrell Desir (Florida State) and Bryce Fitzgerald (Miami).
He made 33 solo tackles, had nine pass deflections and an interception. Also important, he elected to stay with the program, which is never a given in the era of the transfer portal and NIL.
He'll be a foundational piece of Fran Brown's defense in 2026.
In addition, he returned four punts in 2025. He also had one catch and one rushing attempt.
Syracuse outlook in 2026
The Orange have to feel confident heading into the new campaign. For starters, they get quarterback Steve Angeli back from a torn Achilles that caused him to miss the final eight games of the season - all losses. On top of that SU has secured a diverse group of transfers who come in with a significant amount of playing experience at other schools.
