The Syracuse University football team is set to lose a valuable offensive contributor this week when the transfer portal opens, according to Chris Hummer of 24/7 Sports.
Syracuse wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. is entering the transfer portal, his agency @KMMSports tells @247Sports. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound WR has posted 70 catches, 1,076 yards and 7 TDs the last 2 years, including 506 yards and 5 TDs this season.
It should be noted that entering the portal doesn't automatically mean Gill is leaving, but if a player enters the portal, they are at least very serious about exploring their options. A player as accomplished as Gill doesn't enter the portal for no reason, so it's an expectation that he will be gone.
Ironically, Gill had said in November that he was returning to the school. Since he's already said he was returning and then backtracked, it seems even more likely he will follow through on leaving Central New York.
A three-year player for the Orange, Gill has appeared in 37 games and caught 70 balls for 1,136 career yards. He has eight total touchdowns and has served as a go-to for the Orange in the passing game. He'll transfer out with one year of eligibility remaining.
In today's college football world, there's really any number of reasons why a player would want to leave. The Orange went 3-9 this past season and were certainly a frustrating offense to play for once quarterback Steve Angeli was injured in the fourth game. Syracuse lost eight straight games to conclude the campaign.
Angeli is coming back in 2026, which should make offense easier to come by, but evidently that wasn't enough for Gill to want to return.

Syracuse has locked in wide receiver Calvin Russell, who is one of the top receiver recruits in the country. A standout at the Florida high school level, Russell should have plenty of chances to make an impact right away, and with Gill gone, he has one less teammate to battle for catches with.
