Earlier this week, the school announced changes to the gameday location before each Orange home football game.
College football officially kicks off this weekend with Week 0 action across the world. North Carolina opens up Saturday against TCU in Ireland, and No. 14 USC also plays on Saturday.
Syracuse football fans will have to wait one more weekend before they can cheer on their beloved Orange inside the JMA Wireless Dome, as Fran Brown's team opens up the 2026 campaign against New Hampshire on Sept. 5.
Since the last time we saw Syracuse on the field, multiple changes have occurred involving the university at large. Those changes include a new chancellor in Mike Haynie and a new athletic director in Bryan Blair. As far as the football program goes, changes were recently announced to the University's setup for home games.
What are those changes for home football games in 2026?
In a press release posted by Syracuse University, the school announced these additions and changes to the football game day experience:
- Large-format videoboard
- Live music
- Expanded fan amenities
- Family-friendly games and activities will continue to provide entertainment for Orange fans of all ages, with new additions such as a rock climbing wall, mechanical bull and inflatables
- New team-arrival tradition
The area will open three hours before kickoff of each scheduled home game this season.
Also, as noted by Syracuse.com, the in-game experience will be different as well. There will be a T-shirt cannon, music aimed at the younger fans, and they'll work to cater the third quarter to students, which should allow for a livelier crowd in crunch time of close games.
Will fans embrace the changes?
The most difficult part any new set of changes is having longtime fans actually embrace them. Some Orange fans have been tailgating in a set spot for years before home football games.
It may be difficult to get some fans break their traditions and embrace the new ones, but some Orange fans may be more willing to join the events on the quad this fall.
However, there may not be much of a choice for fans, anyways: Syracuse has conducted multiple construction projects near parking lots and buildings near the JMA Wireless Dome. Many former parking lots used by fans for tailgates either have new restrictions on parking fees or have completely eliminated.
As usual, winning will be important in all of this. If the Orange win more games, there will be more buzz around the program which will lead to more fans. If the Orange lose, as they did last year (3-9), then new fan experiences probably won't matter much.
Winning is the ultimate fan experience.
