The Syracuse University men's lacrosse team beat No. 1 Maryland in a pre-Valentine's Day thriller on Friday night at the JMA Wireless Dome. The No. 2 ranked Orange won 11-9 and will assuredly be ranked No. 1 when the new poll comes out.
SU is now 3-0 on the young season while Maryland is 1-1. As noted by Syracuse Athletics, this is the first win over a No. 1 team for Syracuse since 2017, and it snaps an eight-game losing streak against Maryland.
Joey Spallina, who was just named to the watch list for the Tewaaraton Award, had four goals in the victory.
After the game, Spallina was complimentary of the environment, which featured 10,159 fans. He said "best fans in the country!! Go Cuse!" on social media.
Head coach Greg Gait was also proud of the fans, calling Syracuse the best place to play lacrosse.
"There's no other place in the world you can go to a game in February and have 10,000 people screaming and yelling and cheering. This is the greatest place to play lacrosse, there's no question about that.
With 11 national championships and a Final Four appearance in 2025 under its belt, the SU lacrosse program is already well-known worldwide, but this is the kind of win that will continue to raise the profile of the program and help in recruiting.
Jimmy McCool had nine saves.
The Orange will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 21 at Harvard at 1 p.m. ET.
--The SU women's lacrosse team suffered a tough 13-9 loss against No. 1 North Carolina on Friday night. The Orange are 0-2 on the season, but have been challenged by their schedule. In addition to playing UNC, they also lost to No. 7 Maryland in the opener. They'll be back in action next Friday at No. 5 Stanford as the schedule refuses to ease up.
--The SU men's basketball team is back at home on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. ET). The Orange will host SMU after beating Cal on Wednesday night. A win would be the 15th of the campaign for the Orange and would move them to 6-7 in the ACC. Our own Tom Goslowski will be there with live coverage.
--And finally, former Syracuse University football player Justin Outten was recently caught in the middle of an NFL coaching battle. Currently employed by the Seattle Seahawks, the Seahawks blocked him from interviewing with the Las Vegas Raiders. Seattle is considering Outten for a promotion to the offensive coordinator spot after just winning the Super Bowl.
