The team is looking for a new a head coach, but it's also looking for new leadership across the board.

After speculation that it would happen, Syracuse University moved on from men's basketball head coach Adrian Autry on Wednesday morning, firing him after three years and a 49-48 cumulative record.

However, the athletic department moved on from more than just Autry, making sweeping changes throughout the program. SU fired the entire coaching staff and general manager Alex Kline, who was brought in during the summer of 2024.

Syracuse.com had that information.

Kline helped bring in transfers Naithan George, William Kyle and Nate Kingz, who all played prominent roles for the Orange this season.

Syracuse finished at 15-17 and was eliminated from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament on Tuesday, losing to SMU 86-69.

After these moves, there are several questions to ask and think about.

Why the whole coaching staff?

On one hand, it's not atypical to see an entire staff let go when a head coach is let go, however that is more of a professional thing than a college thing. In the pros, a new head coach will want complete control of the staff, while sometimes college assistants can be retained.

However, the new SU coach will evidently have full control of who they bring on, and this current staff will have the opportunity to get a jump start on new positions elsewhere.

The hiring budget for assistants could be an important part of the negotiations for the new head coach.

Why Kline?

Perhaps just a fresh start across the board. Kingz and Kyle performed well for this team, though George was a little more inconsistent. The former NBA scout clearly has an eye for talent, but the administration is just making a clean break from Autry's tenure.

How about the next head coach?

Early reports indicate that Syracuse has six names in mind for the position, including former players Mike Hopkins and Gerry McNamara. McNamara just led Siena University to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night, beating Merrimack in the MAAC title game.

You can read up on each of the six candidates here.

And what about the athletic director situation?

Current athletic director John Wildhack is stepping down at the end of June and the Orange are working to hire his replacement now. According to a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN, the new athletic director will have the say in this hire, though it's unclear how quickly the new AD will actually be in place.
