According to a new report from Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68, South Florida basketball coach Bryan Hodgson has turned down an offer from Syracuse to be the next head coach of the Orange.
SU fired Adrian Autry last week and evidently tried to move fast on Hodgson, who has South Florida in the NCAA Tournament after a 23-8 season that saw them win the American Conference championship. They are a No. 6 seed and will play No. 11 Louisville on Thursday afternoon in Buffalo.
Per Goodman:
BREAKING: South Florida head coach Bryan Hodgson has turned down the Syracuse job, source told @thefieldof68. It’s likely that Hodgson will decide between Providence and staying with the Bulls - who have put together a lucrative financial package similar to what Josh Schertz received at Saint Louis in an attempt to get him to stay in Tampa.
An Olean, N.Y., native, Hodgson has only been the head coach at South Florida for this season. However, the 37-year-old has been coaching college hoops for 18 years. Prior to this season's success with USF, he coached for two years at Arkansas State, winning the Sun Belt regular season title in 2024-25.
Before Arkansas State, he was an assistant coach with both Alabama and Buffalo, working under Nate Oats. He helped Buffalo get to the NCAA Tournament three times, just as he did Alabama.
Given his New York roots, recruiting ability to the state and his knowledge of the Syracuse fan base, he was a logical choice, but Syracuse will have to pivot now.

--Mike Hopkins, a former SU player and longtime assistant coach who previously served seven years as the head coach at Washington.
--Gerry McNamara, a former Syracuse player who spent 15 years on staff before taking the head coaching job at Siena. The Saints are in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 16 seed.
--Luke Murray, an assistant coach at UConn
--Joe Gallo, the current head coach at Merrimack. He won the regular season MAAC title before losing to McNamara's Siena team in the league title game.
The Syracuse women's basketball team earned a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They will open up on Saturday (5:30 p.m. ET) against No. Iowa State. The winner play No. 1 UConn (presumably) on Monday.
