About six weeks ago, we knew that the University of North Carolina football program was in some hot water because of general manager Mike Lombardi, who was placed on administrative leave after a human resources complaint from another employee.

Well, that water is much hotter this week, as Lombardi stepped away from the program for good on Thursday as part of a broader investigation into the program.

WRAL had the bombshell report on Thursday right after Lombardi resigned, saying that UNC is investigating the program as a whole under head coach Bill Belichick. According to them, the university is looking into whether or not Steve Belichick, Bill's son and team defensive coordinator, used drugs at school facilities. They are looking into whether or not Steve Belichick provided drugs to at least one player, and they are also looking into potential improper relationships between coaches and recruiting staffers and at least recruiting staffer and a player.

All this is to wonder: Will Bill Belichick survive this, and will he still be the head coach when the Tar Heels play Syracuse this season? Several people have already surmised that UNC is looking for a way out of the Belichick business, and if they find further improprieties in the program, they could fire him for cause and save the additional money left on his contract.

Only time will tell. The Tar Heels are 1-0 after beating TCU in the season opener last week.

Last season, the Tar Heels became a national punchline because of their struggles (4-8, 2-6 ACC), and Belichick's relationship with 20-something Jordan Hudson. However, they did beat Syracuse in the JMA Wireless Dome on Halloween Night (27-10).

This season, the two teams will play on Oct. 24 in Chapel Hill, and again, there are questions about if Belichick will actually make it to that matchup.

Georgia Tech opened up its season with a loss to Colorado on Thursday night, falling 14-13 because of a blocked field goal in the final moments. While the Yellow Jackets don't play the Orange this season, they did go 6-2 in the ACC last year, making them a strong contender inside the league again this year. A loss in the opening week could put a damper on their season.

Syracuse will open its season on Saturday at noon ET at the JMA Wireless Dome against New Hampshire. The Wildcats are 0-1 after a season-opening loss to Albany. Syracuse went 3-9 a year ago.
