Naithan George is entering the transfer portal, setting up the potential for an uncomfortable portal period.
The transfer portal opens up on Tuesday for men's basketball and there's an uncomfortable reality for the Syracuse program: New head coach Gerry McNamara could need to replace all five starters from this year's team.
Now, some of you will say that's a good thing given that the Orange went 15-17 and missed the NCAA Tournament, but it still makes for a tall task for McNamara, who not only needs to replace talent, but also experience. JJ Starling and William Kyle III were seniors who are lost to graduation, but rising senior Naithan George entered the portal on Saturday as well. That's a lot of leadership and a lot of games played set to depart.
On top of that, veteran guard Nate Kingz is no sure thing to get another year of eligibility - or return - and there's been speculation that big man Donnie Freeman could transfer or enter the NBA Draft. If Freeman leaves and Kingz can't or doesn't come back, McNamara will have an entirely new starting lineup.
And with Tyler Betsey also entering the portal on Friday, the Orange are also losing a solid bench option.

Well, Kiyan Anthony is a lock to return, so he's certainly in line for more minutes. Anthony flashed spurts of excellence this past season, and if he's able to get stronger, it should help him handle the ball better offensively while also limiting his weaknesses defensively.
Beyond him, Syracuse will work to bring back Sadiq White Jr., who showed great athleticism in his first year. The Orange are expected to bring in Gavin Doty, an all-MAAC selection who played for McNamara at Siena.
Beyond that? McNamara will have do some convincing in the portal to fill in the holes - and SU will have to pony up in the NIL department.
