After a trip to the NCAA Tournament this season, the Orange are already seeing a roster shift.
The Syracuse University women's basketball team just saw it's season wrap up in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. And while everyone should be excited about the continued growth of the program and the return of superstar Uche Izoje, the offseason is already in chaos.
On Thursday, a third member of the Orange's roster announced her intentions to enter the transfer portal.
Just as a reminder: Entering the portal doesn't guarantee that a player will leave, but if they are willing to enter the portal in the first place, it's certainly likely.
Justus Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald was the first to announce her intentions to enter the portal in March. The first-year from Roswell, Ga. played in 11 games this past season. The 6'1' forward averaged 2.0 points and 2.1 rebounds. Fitzgerald will have three years of college eligibility remaining.
Maddy Potts
Potts has appeared in 47 games over the past two seasons for the Orange. The 6'0' guard averaged 3.2 points per game during her two year tenure at Syracuse. The Australia native played a combined 27 minutes in the Orange's two NCAA Tournament games last month. Potts will have two seasons remaining of eligibility. Potts posted this message on Instagram to announce her departure.
"Syracuse has helped shape me as both a person and a player and I’m forever grateful for everyone who’s been part of my journey. Thank you to my coaches and teammates for always believing me, I will forever be grateful. After much thought I've decided to enter the transfer portal to take the next step in my basketball journey. Thank you for everything. Forever Orange"
Sophie Burrows
Burrows is the most impactful transfer of the three players. A team captain in 25-26, the Australian has started in 61 of the past 62 games for Syracuse. In three seasons with the Orange, The 6'2' Burrows averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The significant contributor was also named the ACC's Scholar Athlete of the Year. Burrows will enter the portal with one season of eligibility remaining.
Information on this year's transfer portal
This year for women's basketball the transfer portal officially opens on Monday, April 6. According to the NCAA's website, the transfer portal is described as:
A digital, compliance-manager system allowing student athletes to officially declare their intent to move to another school. It mandates that players notify their current school, which has 48 hours to enter their name, permitting other coaches to contact them.
In the 2026 window, April 20 is the final day players can enter their names. Players are not required to commit to a school during that window.
Syracuse's 2025-2026 season
The Orange finished this past season with a 24-9 overall record and a 12-6 record in ACC play. Syracuse qualified for an NCAA tournament berth and won a first round game over Iowa State 72-63. Syracuse's season ended in the Round of 32 with a blowout loss to the top-seeded UConn Huskies 98-45.
