Fueled by a fresh offensive philosophy and Justin Herbert’s elite arm, the former first-round pick eyes a breakout season within the Chargers' revamped, high-octane scoring attack.
TCU fans have seen plenty of reasons to believe Quentin Johnston could be in line for his best NFL season yet. Entering his fourth year with the Los Angeles Chargers, the former Horned Frog is especially optimistic about what the team's new-look offense can accomplish.
Johnston's excitement centers largely around the arrival of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who brings a different offensive philosophy to Los Angeles. The Chargers are hoping McDaniel's creativity can unlock another level from quarterback Justin Herbert and the team's collection of playmakers.
And Johnston appears to be enjoying what he has seen so far.
"I'm glad I got a quarterback that can get the ball out there like that," Johnston said in a recent interview. "I always still go back at film and get amazed at some of the passes and how far he throws the ball. Fun to be a part of."
For a receiver with Johnston's physical gifts, having a quarterback capable of consistently attacking every level of the field is especially important. The former TCU standout has made significant strides over the past two seasons, and another step forward could put him in position for a breakout campaign.
Johnston also had plenty of praise for the overall direction of the offense.
"We got a supreme quarterback, supreme offensive coordinator and we got all the pieces that fit in and mesh well. I'm excited for us."
That optimism comes after Johnston finished the 2025 season with 51 receptions for 735 yards and eight touchdowns. He has now scored 16 touchdowns over the past two seasons, showing a much different level of production than he had during his rookie campaign.
The Chargers also picked up Johnston's fifth-year option this offseason, demonstrating that the organization still believes he can become an important part of its long-term plans.
There was a glimpse of what Johnston and Herbert could accomplish during the preseason finale. Herbert connected with Johnston for a 65-yard touchdown, which is just one yard shorter than Johnston's longest career touchdown reception that he had back in 2024.
For TCU fans, Johnston's development is particularly encouraging. He finished his Horned Frogs career with 2,190 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, including a spectacular 2022 season that helped TCU reach the College Football Playoff.
Now, Johnston is entering a season where expectations are higher than ever. With Herbert throwing him the ball and McDaniel designing the offense, the former first-round pick clearly believes the Chargers have the ingredients necessary for something special.
And if his preseason connection with Herbert is any indication, TCU fans may have plenty to watch for once the regular season begins.
