Following a dominant 96-tackle campaign, the Arlington native anchors the TCU secondary as a premier defensive playmaker poised to challenge for college football's most prestigious individual honors.
TCU safety Jamel Johnson continues to rack up preseason recognition ahead of what could be a defining season for the Horned Frogs.
Johnson was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award preseason watch list on Friday, adding another prestigious honor to an already impressive collection of accolades. The award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club, is given annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.
The recognition comes after Johnson established himself as one of the Big 12's top defensive backs during the 2025 season. The Arlington, Texas, native started all 13 games for TCU as a junior and finished the year with 96 tackles and five interceptions. His five picks tied for the most in the Big 12.
Johnson's production last season represented another step forward in his development. As a sophomore in 2024, he recorded 73 tackles, finishing third on the team. He followed that performance by becoming one of the most productive and reliable players in the Horned Frogs' secondary.
With Johnson returning for his senior season, TCU has a proven playmaker to build its defense around. His ability to make tackles while also creating turnovers gives the Horned Frogs a difference-maker in the back end, and his experience should be especially valuable as the team prepares for another competitive Big 12 campaign.
The Bednarik Award recognition is also the latest in a long line of preseason honors for Johnson. He was previously named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team and earned spots on the watch lists for both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Paycom Jim Thorpe Award. The Thorpe Award is presented to the nation's top defensive back, making Johnson's presence on multiple defensive award lists a strong indication of the expectations surrounding him entering 2026.
Johnson is one of 17 Big 12 players included on this year's Bednarik Award watch list. The award has been presented since 1994 and honors the nation's top defensive player.
Of course, making a preseason watch list is only the beginning. Johnson will have to replicate or improve upon his 2025 production to remain in the national award conversation once the season begins.
For TCU, though, having an experienced safety capable of making plays all over the field gives the defense a valuable foundation. If Johnson can build on his breakout junior campaign, he could emerge as one of the most impactful defensive players in the Big 12 and a legitimate contender for postseason honors.
