The former TCU standout secured more than just a score in the Raiders' preseason opener, lightheartedly claiming a piece of rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza’s historic NFL debut.
Jack Bech's first preseason game with the Las Vegas Raiders in his sophomore season was memorable for several reasons, but the former TCU wide receiver made sure one piece of history stayed with him.
Bech caught a six-yard touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza during the Raiders' preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, giving the No. 1 overall pick his first touchdown pass as an NFL player. Mendoza finished the night 10-of-16 for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Bech caught all three passes thrown his way.
Naturally, Mendoza wanted the football from his first NFL touchdown pass.
There was just one problem: Bech had other plans.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Bech made it clear that the touchdown ball belonged to him after catching the scoring pass. The moment added another layer to what was already an impressive night for the second-year receiver.
"I took it, so unfortunately he’s not getting it," Bech joked. "I don’t know how we determined it, but I had it and I wasn’t giving it up so I guess it’s mine. He can have the next one."
For Bech, the football was a fitting souvenir from a performance that could help him establish himself in the Raiders' offense. It was his first touchdown in the black and silver, as he was unable to get into the end zone in his first year with the team.
The former Horned Frog was involved early and often. His first reception of the night came from Mendoza on third down and moved the chains, and the rookie quarterback later found him in the end zone to cap a nine-play, 79-yard scoring drive.
Bech also made an impact beyond the box score. He provided a strong block that helped spring running back Mike Washington Jr. for a 53-yard run, showing the type of all-around effort that can earn a receiver additional opportunities.
The performance was especially encouraging considering Bech is entering his second NFL season. After being selected by Las Vegas in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the former TCU standout is looking to carve out a larger role in the Raiders' offense.
His preseason opener certainly gave him momentum.
The Raiders ultimately lost 27-14, but the result was secondary to the individual progress made during the first preseason game. Mendoza showed poise in his debut, while Bech demonstrated that he can be a reliable target for the rookie quarterback.
And while Mendoza may have thrown the pass, Bech apparently decided the touchdown ball was his to keep.
For TCU fans, seeing Bech come down with the first touchdown of Mendoza's professional career was a fun reminder that his Horned Frog success is only the beginning of his NFL journey.
