Josh Hoover’s No. 9 transfer ranking spotlights what TCU lost as Indiana hands the former Horned Frogs quarterback a championship-sized opportunity in 2026 too.

FORT WORTH - Josh Hoover’s transfer from TCU to Indiana wasn’t the loudest move of the 2026 portal cycle. It may still become one of the most painful.

The former Horned Frogs quarterback landed at No. 9 on a ranking of college football’s biggest transfers, placing him behind several high-priced stars and headline-grabbing SEC additions.

For TCU football, however, Hoover’s value can’t be measured by where he appears on somebody else’s list

He was the proven quarterback Sonny Dykes no longer has.

Hoover left Fort Worth after establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced passers, previously producing a season with more than 4,000 yards through the air.

He entered the portal carrying a strong 0.9400 transfer rating and immediately became an attractive option for programs unwilling to gamble on an untested starter.

Indiana represented something even bigger than a fresh start.

The defending national champions needed a successor to Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, and Curt Cignetti found one with the arm talent and experience to keep the Hoosiers’ offense operating at a championship level.

Hoover won’t be asked to rescue a broken program. He’s stepping into one expecting to remain in the College Football Playoff conversation.

That should sting in Fort Worth.

TCU now turns toward Harvard transfer Jaden Craig, whose mobility and ball security could push Dykes’ offense in a different direction.

Craig may ultimately become exactly what the Horned Frogs need, but there’s no avoiding the uncertainty involved in replacing a quarterback with Hoover’s production and Power Four experience.

That’s what makes the No. 9 ranking interesting. Eight transfers may have received more attention, larger NIL numbers or higher national expectations, but few moves created such a clear divide between two programs.

Indiana gained a veteran passer capable of extending its title window. TCU inherited one of the biggest quarterback questions in the Big 12.

Hoover’s new challenge won’t be easy. The Big Ten will test his decision-making, durability and ability to perform under championship pressure.

Replacing a Heisman winner also creates an impossible comparison every time the offense stalls.

Still, Indiana knows what it’s getting.

TCU is about to find out what it lost.

The Horned Frogs don’t need Craig to become Hoover immediately. They need him to make this transition feel like evolution rather than damage control.

Until that happens, every big afternoon Hoover produces in Bloomington will feel like another reminder traveling south to Fort Worth.
