Amid stadium boos and "paper bag" protests, the Horned Frogs coach remains focused on silencing critics through late-season results rather than acknowledging the mounting pressure in Fort Worth.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes is facing growing frustration from the Horned Frogs fan base, but he isn't allowing the outside criticism to change how he approaches his job.
Following Saturday's 22-16 victory over Kansas, Dykes addressed the boos and chants calling for his dismissal that could be heard inside Amon G. Carter Stadium. Some fans even wore bags over their heads as frustration continued to build during another difficult season in Fort Worth.
Despite the criticism, Dykes said he wasn't aware of what was happening in the stands during the game.
"I didn't notice any of it. I had a job to do and I was trying to do my job the best that I could. I honestly didn't know about it, didn't see it," Dykes said on Tuesday. "I think that's part of our job as coaches, is to understand the way things are now. It's very different, it is a different world."
The TCU coach acknowledged that criticism and calls for coaches to be fired have become increasingly common throughout college football. However, he made it clear that those outside opinions aren't going to influence his preparation or commitment to the program.
The frustration from TCU supporters is understandable given the team's performance this season. The Horned Frogs enter their upcoming matchup against Arizona with a 4-4 overall record and a 2-3 mark in Big 12 play.
Although TCU has shown flashes of being a competitive team, it has struggled to find consistency, particularly offensively. The Horned Frogs have lost four one-score games against Power Four opponents by a combined 24 points, leaving little room for error throughout the season.
He also acknowledged that a 4-4 record isn't good enough, despite the program's previous success under his leadership.
And while it may be understandable for TCU fans to be frustrated, it does not mean they should be calling for Dykes to leave. It even went as far as a "Fire Sonny!" chant in the crowd. While fans can get irritated with the current state of the team, that might be taking it a bit too far for the moment.
TCU now has an opportunity to build some momentum with a difficult road matchup against Arizona coming up Friday. With the season approaching its final stretch, the Horned Frogs need results quickly if Dykes hopes to quiet the growing criticism surrounding his program.
