Sonny Dykes says TCU has plenty to fix after its 15-10 loss to North Carolina, while Max Carroll and Ka’Morreun Pimpton see reasons for optimism.

TCU football has two weeks to decide whether its season-opening loss was a warning sign or simply one bad Saturday.

Head coach Sonny Dykes made it clear during TCU’s bye-week press conference that the Horned Frogs have work to do after falling 15-10 to North Carolina in Dublin.

The loss wasn’t defined by one catastrophic mistake. It was the collection of offensive inconsistency, penalties and missed opportunities that left TCU scoreless for the final three quarters.

That’s where the bye week becomes valuable.

TCU moved the ball well enough to create chances but finished with only 269 net yards and went 1-for-5 on fourth down.

Quarterback Jaden Craig completed 20 of 32 passes for 175 yards, while the Horned Frogs were penalized 11 times.

The offense did produce a few encouraging moments, including a 40-yard reception by senior tight end Ka’Morreun Pimpton.

At 6-6 and 250 pounds, Pimpton remains one of the most intriguing matchup pieces on TCU’s roster. His size and catch radius give the Horned Frogs something they’ll need to exploit more consistently as the passing game develops around Craig.

While the offense searches for answers, TCU’s defense already showed it can keep the Horned Frogs in games.

Linebacker Max Carroll was one of the biggest reasons.

Making his first career start, Carroll finished with a team-high nine tackles and played a role in two North Carolina turnovers.

He forced and recovered one fumble and later recovered another, producing exactly the kind of performance TCU needed from a linebacker stepping into a larger role.

The defense held North Carolina to 15 points and 90 rushing yards, giving Dykes something substantial to build around even after the disappointing result.

Now comes the response.

TCU has an open week before returning home Sept. 12 against Grambling State at Amon G. Carter Stadium. On paper, it’s a game the Horned Frogs should control.

But after Dublin, simply winning won’t answer every question.

Dykes needs to see cleaner football, better offensive execution and fewer self-inflicted mistakes. Pimpton needs to become a more consistent weapon. Carroll and the defense need to keep setting the standard.

TCU’s season isn’t in trouble after one loss. But the next performance needs to look much different.
