After earlier buzz that this was in the plans, TCU has officially locked down head football coach Sonny Dykes with a long-term contract extension.
TCU announced this week that the school has reached an agreement on a contract extension with head football coach Sonny Dykes.
Dykes' tenure is headlined by the Horned Frogs' appearance in the 2022 CFP National Championship Game, and with TCU having won the most games of any Big 12 team since that year, his retainment marks a long-term commitment to his program. The Frogs' eight wins over ranked opponents are also the most in the conference since 2022.
"Competing for national and Big 12 championships requires the right leadership, and Sonny has proven he's that person," TCU athletic direct Mark Buddie said in a statement.
"His track record on the field, his standing in the community, and the decisions he's made to position this program to pursue those goals speak for themselves."
According to TCU Athletics, Dykes' 36 wins in his first four seasons as head coach are the most by a TCU coach since Francis Schmidt won 37 from 1929-32.
The Horned Frogs went 9-4 in 2025, earning back-to-back nine-win seasons for the first time in over a decade and the first time since joining the Big 12 Conference.
"TCU has had seven All-Americans, 57 All-Big 12 selections, six of the top seven crowds in program history, and 13 players selected in the NFL Draft during Dykes' tenure, including eight in 2023 to lead the Big 12 and schools in the state of Texas, place fourth nationally and set a program record since the NFL went to its current seven-round format in 1994," according to Dykes' file on the program website.
"I am appreciative and thankful to Mike Buddie, Chancellor Daniel Pullin, and our administration for their belief and support of our program," Dykes said.
"The opportunity to pursue a national championship, the College Football Playoff, and Big 12 championships exists right here in Fort Worth, and my family and I, as well as our entire staff, are excited to continue that pursuit as Horned Frogs."
While the TCU offense will undergo a change in on-field leadership with veteran Josh Hoover transferring to Indiana and Harvard product Jaden Craig coming to Fort Worth, Dykes' steady presence will uphold the momentum the program is building as it enters another competitive year in the Big 12.
The Horned Frogs are beginning spring practices this month ahead of their season opener on August 29 against Bill Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels. The game will be held in Dublin, Ireland in the Aer Lingus Football Classic.
After non-conference games against Grambling State and Arkansas State, TCU will open Big 12 play in Week 4 against UCF in Orlando on Sep. 26.
