North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is not expected to be with the Tar Heels for Saturday's matchup against TCU. He has been on an indefinite medical leave since Aug. 6 and will reportedly remain away from the team as UNC begins its 2026 campaign.
That is significant news for a TCU team preparing to face a North Carolina defense led by the most recognizable coaching families in football.
While Steve Belichick will not be on the sideline, his absence does not mean the Tar Heels will be without their defensive structure. Head coach Bill Belichick and defensive line coach Bob Diaco have reportedly been preparing the unit, with Bill Belichick expected to take over the defensive play-calling responsibilities against the Horned Frogs.
Still, losing a defensive coordinator immediately before the first game of the season creates another layer of uncertainty for North Carolina.
For TCU, that could be something to monitor closely.
The Horned Frogs will be looking to take advantage of any communication issues or adjustments that come with a different setup on the sideline. TCU's offense will also be facing a defense that has had to prepare for the season without its normal defensive coordinator in recent weeks.
