TCU was just treated to four seasons of elite quarterback play from Josh Hoover (who just transferred to national champions Indiana), and now head coach Sonny Dykes is beginning his search for his next star signal-caller.
At the forefront of his search is Trey Wright, a dual-threat QB from Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas, set to graduate in 2028.
At 5-11, 175 pounds, Wright is a top prospect for division one programs in football and basketball.
In addition to an offer from the Horned Frogs, he has football offers from SMU, Cincinnati, Texas State, UTSA, North Texas, Sacramento State and UTEP, along with basketball offers from Nevada and San Diego.
Wright took the state by storm last season, putting up video game-like numbers in his sophomore season.
In 16 games, he completed 211 passes for 4042 yards, 38 touchdowns, with a 67.4 completion percentage. Wright was also a massive threat on the ground, rushing the ball 163 times for 1764 yards and 16 touchdowns.
His performances earned him the Dallas Morning News Sportsday High School Newcomer of the Year award and the District 5-5A MVP.
“Going 15–1 and playing for a state championship is something every kid dreams about when you play high school football, and to do it with this group made it even better,” Wright said. “I felt like I grew a lot… This season was special, but I’m already thinking about how I can help my team come back even better next year.”
Wright is focused on basketball season right now, but he’s still expected to take a few visits to top college football programs like Alabama, Clemson and North Carolina in the coming months.
That’s some steep competition for TCU to go up against, but Wright has spoken highly of the program after his visits to Fort Worth.
“I have previously been on two game day visits this past football season, and TCU has a great environment when it comes to football, “ Wright said. “It seems to be something special. I am fired up to build stronger relationships with the coaching staff, especially Coach Robbins and Coach Dykes, and get back on campus this spring.”
The star sophomore is starting to become a hot commodity across the country.
By fostering an early relationship with Wright, the Horned Frogs are putting some early points on the board in his recruitment battle, possibly giving them an advantage when it’s time for him to commit.
