TCU basketball didn’t need extra juice heading into its NCAA Tournament opener against Ohio State, but David Punch made sure this matchup got some anyway.
The Horned Frogs forward raised eyebrows before Thursday’s Round of 64 game when he made it clear he likes TCU’s chances in a big way, saying, “I think at the end of the day, we win this matchup nine times out of 10 … based on our physicality and athleticism.”
That’s not subtle, that’s a full-send March Madness quote. And honestly? It fits the mood of this game.
TCU enters the tournament at 22-11, with Ohio State just behind at 21-12, so there isn’t much separating these teams on paper.
That’s exactly why Punch’s comment landed the way it did. In a matchup that already looked tight, he didn’t play the cliche game.
He didn’t go with the usual “respect our opponent” script. He threw down a challenge and made it clear that TCU believes its size, toughness, and movement can tilt the floor.
That belief isn’t coming out of nowhere.
The Horned Frogs have built a reputation around being a hard team to deal with physically, especially when their length starts disrupting rhythm and turning possessions ugly.
Punch’s point, whether Ohio State loves hearing it or not, is that TCU trusts its roster. The Frogs believe their athletes can make this game uncomfortable.
Now, of course, comments like that don’t stay in a vacuum this time of year.
Ohio State now has perfect bulletin-board material, and with a veteran scorer like Bruce Thornton leading the Buckeyes, TCU knows there’s real danger in waking up a team that was already motivated.
That’s the tradeoff. Confidence sounds great when you win. It gets replayed forever when you don’t.
Still, this is March. Nobody remembers polite. Punch gave the tournament what it always needs: edge, attitude, and a little controlled chaos before tipoff.
Now TCU has to back it up on the floor. Because if the Horned Frogs really do think they win this matchup “nine times out of 10,” Thursday is the one that matters most.
