TCU Horned Frogs Football Hires New Cornerbacks Coach to Boost Pass Defense cover image

TCU adds veteran coach Benny Boyd to lead cornerbacks after Wyoming’s top-15 pass defense and elite third-down numbers under his watch.

FORT WORTH - TCU is retooling its defensive brain trust - and Sonny Dykes just landed a veteran secondary specialist with a proven resume.

Benny Boyd, fresh off a six-year run at Wyoming, has been tapped as the Horned Frogs’ new cornerbacks coach.

The 25-year coaching veteran arrives in Fort Worth after helping the Cowboys build one of the Mountain West’s stingiest pass defenses and one of the nation’s toughest third-down units.

In 2024, Wyoming led the entire country in third-down defense, allowing conversions on just 25.8 percent of attempts.

The year prior, the Cowboys ranked No. 26 nationally in turnovers gained, fueling their first nine-win season in nearly three decades.

In 2025, Boyd helped oversee a passing defense that gave up just 175.5 yards per game - good for No. 14 in the FBS.

Wyoming finished with a top-five pass defense in the Mountain West four times during Boyd’s tenure, including a No. 13 national ranking in pass defense in 2021.

His first season in Laramie also saw the Cowboys climb to No. 16 nationally in total defense.

For a TCU program looking to tighten up its coverage and create more takeaways in the Big 12, Boyd’s track record speaks loudly.

Before Wyoming, Boyd coached defensive backs and special teams at Eastern Illinois, where the Panthers ranked No. 30 nationally in total defense (350.6 yards allowed per game) in 2019.

His career includes stops at Central Washington, North Dakota and Luther College, where he developed four Division III All-Americans and 19 All-Conference players.

In 2010, he was a finalist for the AFCA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year.

Boyd, a former Aurora University defensive back who once held the school’s single-season passes defended record, also completed Bill Walsh Fellowships with the Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers.

TCU also finalized several assistant position coaches, including Aaron Green - the former Horned Frog running back who rushed for 1,272 yards in 2015 - as assistant RB coach. Staff shifts include Shaun Taylor moving to quarterbacks and Julius Lewis sliding to safeties.

TCU is betting Boyd’s defensive blueprint can help the Frogs clamp down in 2026.
