TCU football arrived in Ireland wearing plenty of style, but the Horned Frogs’ execution deserted them before halftime.
After unleashing a promising rushing attack and grabbing an early touchdown lead, TCU watched penalties, stalled possessions and a disastrous special-teams mistake hand North Carolina a 12-10 halftime advantage in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium.
The first half offered an encouraging glimpse of offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis’ new system. Jeremy Payne introduced the outside-zone attack with a 48-yard run on TCU’s opening possession, bursting through a crease created by Jaheim Buchannon and Witten Van Hoy.
The drive ended with a Kyle Lemmermann field goal, but the message was clear: TCU could move North Carolina off the line of scrimmage.
The Horned Frogs’ defense also delivered early. Max Carroll and Michael Short helped stiffen near the goal line on North Carolina’s opening drive, limiting Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels to a short field goal.
After TCU forced a punt on UNC’s next possession, a 33-yard return handed quarterback Jaden Craig excellent field position. Jon Denman finished the short drive with a two-yard touchdown run, giving the Frogs a 10-3 lead.
That’s when the game began slipping.
North Carolina attacked TCU’s soft coverage for several chunk completions before J’Mari McGill scored on a nine-yard run to tie the game. The secondary eventually tightened its coverage, but the Frogs’ offense lost the aggressive identity it had shown early.
TCU moved away from the run, struggled against North Carolina’s pass-rush stunts and repeatedly sabotaged itself with penalties. Craig flashed mobility while extending plays, but the Harvard transfer never appeared fully comfortable inside the pocket.
The most damaging mistake wasn’t Craig’s.
With 1:49 remaining in the second quarter, a bad punt snap sailed away from TCU’s formation and resulted in a 31-yard loss and a safety. That unforced error gave North Carolina its first lead, 12-10.
Jamel Johnson and Carroll later combined to force a fumble, giving TCU another opportunity before halftime. The Frogs couldn’t turn the takeaway into points.
TCU has shown it can control this matchup when the running game is involved and the defense plays aggressively. It has also shown how quickly sloppy football can erase that advantage.
The Frogs don’t need a dramatic second-half reinvention. They need to return to Payne, protect Craig and stop gifting Bill Belichick free opportunities.
The Irish uniforms look sharp. The football needs to follow.
