TCU blew a 10-3 lead, committed double-digit penalties and failed twice on fourth down near the goal line in a brutal 15-10 loss to North Carolina.
TCU football didn’t merely lose its season opener in Dublin. The Horned Frogs gift-wrapped Bill Belichick’s revenge.
TCU jumped ahead 10-3, rushed for 142 yards behind Jeremy Payne and repeatedly moved within striking distance of the North Carolina end zone.
None of it mattered. The Frogs went scoreless over the final 49 minutes and fell 15-10 in a rainy Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium.
That’s a long flight home with plenty to regret.
After Kyle Lemmermann’s opening field goal, Ed Small’s 33-yard punt return positioned TCU for the game’s first touchdown.
Jon Denman finished the short drive from two yards out, giving the Frogs a seven-point advantage.
Their offense never scored again.
North Carolina answered with Jaylen McGill’s nine-yard touchdown run, but the game’s defining points came from a TCU special-teams disaster.
A punt snap sailed over John Hoyet Chance, who kicked the loose ball through the end zone for a safety. That gave UNC a 12-10 halftime lead.
The Tar Heels added one third-quarter field goal after Melkart Abou-Jaoude stripped quarterback Jaden Craig.
Those five points were enough.
Craig’s TCU debut produced 20 completions on 32 attempts for 175 yards, but he never unlocked North Carolina’s defense.
The Harvard transfer didn’t throw an interception, yet he also failed to deliver a touchdown or a game-changing completion.
The Frogs still had two golden opportunities to escape.
Payne was stuffed on fourth-and-1 from the North Carolina 5 during the third quarter. On TCU’s final possession, Craig rolled left on fourth-and-2 from the 10 and threw incomplete with 4:05 remaining.
The ESPN game recap confirmed that TCU failed on both late fourth-down attempts deep in Tar Heels territory.
Billy Edwards Jr. wasn’t spectacular for North Carolina, but he was steadier than Craig. The Wisconsin transfer completed 16 of 28 passes for 232 yards while helping UNC finish with 322 total yards.
TCU’s lack of discipline made everything worse. The Frogs committed double-digit penalties, then jumped offside on North Carolina’s fourth-and-1 hard count with 30 seconds remaining.
That mistake handed the Tar Heels the first down they needed to end the game.
A year after humiliating Belichick 48-14 in his North Carolina debut, TCU allowed him to return the favor with a far uglier victory.
The Frogs have an open week before hosting Grambling State on Sept. 12. They’ll need every practice.
This wasn’t simply a bad offensive day. It was a warning about execution, composure and a team that couldn’t finish anything it started.
